Currently, schools see online learning as transactional, where students locate information or use an app to complete an assignment. Instead, we need to make online learning transformational, where students build personalized learning networks based on their interests to promote academic enrichment, civic engagement, and career opportunity. In order to do so, schools must teach Digital Citizenship, Media Literacy, and Digital Portfolios through social media. We can ensure our students get online as active, informed citizens when we hook them with an interest or passion. We can ensure our students are media literate by guiding them to networks where experts and professional organizations share quality content. And finally, by helping students create, contribute, and collaborate in these networks, we can ensure they build positive digital portfolios.
